Smart Fleet Management Solutions and the3 Benefits of Digitizing Your Operations

Benefits to smart fleet management solutions

As more companies and municipalities transition their fleet operations to digital platforms, away from systems that rely on paper, the benefits of smart systems become increasingly apparent.

Consider Hillside Solutions. As recently as 2018, the waste-hauling business in Omaha, Nebraska, operated on a purely paper-based system. Lacking the digital capabilities to effectively track services and dispute unwarranted complaints, the company struggled to meet growing customer demand and verify service issues and complaints.

The decision to go digital

It was clear that Hillside needed a technological overhaul to overcome its paper-driven challenges. The chosen waste management solution? RUBICONSmartCity, now a part of Routeware.

With a single, digital system for customer, route, and resource management, Hillside was finally equipped to meet its full potential in terms of route efficiency, customer growth, and reduction in unnecessary operating costs. The benefits are compelling for any organization with a fleet to manage.

Benefits of Smart Fleet Management Solutions

Double the route efficiency

Between 2019 and 2023, residential trash route efficiency increased by 122%, from an average of 23 pickups per hour to 51. During the same period, residential recycling route efficiency  increased from 35 to 54 pickups per hour. The sequenced, more efficient routes have helped Hillside save fuel and reduce driver overtime.

Double the customer base

More efficient routes equate to increased operational capacity, enabling Hillside to serve more and more customers. From 2020 to 2023, the company doubled its customer base after implementing smart fleet management solutions, from roughly 4,000 to more than 8,000 customers.

Massive savings from avoided go-backs

One of the more striking outcomes of Hillside’s switch to digital is the reduction in unnecessary go-backs. Using in-cab devices, drivers are able to capture photos of issues at the curb, such as “bin not out,” “contaminated,” or “overflowing bins.” Supervisors then email these timestamped images to customers to verify why bins were not serviced. The resulting decrease in repeat issues and associated complaints will save Hillside approximately $849,750 per year in avoided go-backs.
