On-board cameras uncover cost savings through accident exoneration, fewer disputes and go-backs, and less time spent investigating service questions. Many insurers now incentivize fleets with cost savings when they include camera technology on their trucks. Cameras also improve drivers’ safety, which is priceless.

Today’s waste and refuse vehicles can be equipped with an advanced on-board computer software, truck camera system, and an integrated waste management solution to boost safety and efficiency. These on-board cameras for trucks help drivers maintain full visibility while collecting. By using commercial fleet cameras, operators can monitor performance, reduce liability, and streamline collection. These waste management cameras are critical for modern fleets looking to optimize routes and ensure service verification.
An onboard truck camera system captures live and recorded imagery to confirm pickups, improve safety, and reduce disputes. All this data flows into a unified, back-office portal, where dispatchers and office staff can review video, manage exceptions, and optimize the overall operation.
Each truck equipped with an on-board camera completes more work, reduces go-backs and customer service admin, and generates additional income through chargeable services. We have a calculator that can quantify these savings for your organization.
Some drivers aren’t sure about cameras at first. But once they realize cameras protect them, and that a photo can show a resident’s bin wasn’t out when they call in about a missed pickup, they come around. It’s not about catching anyone doing something wrong. It’s about having a clear and confident answer when questions come up.
Picture Service is the entry point, with automatic photo capture at each service stop, available in the Routeware portal alongside the GPS service record. Premium Video extends this with up to eight cameras per vehicle, live feed access, a Mobile Digital Video Recorder (MDVR) on each truck, and full 1080p HD video downloads. The live feed runs at 480–540p so supervisors see what’s happening without buffering, while recorded footage downloads in full HD for incident review. Footage is stored on the truck for two to six weeks, depending on settings.
Approximately one hour per camera, handled by a Routeware technician or a qualified fleet installer.
Through Routeware’s integration with WasteVision AI, truck cameras use AI image analysis to spot contamination and overflowing bins at the curb. Each detection lands in Routeware as a record with photo evidence, ready for resident education, billing or a customer dispute. Read more in our blog on operational AI in waste collection
