World Cleanup Day 2023
World Cleanup Day (WCD) unites millions of volunteers, governments and organizations, in 191 countries and territories, to tackle the global mismanaged waste crisis and to help create a new, more sustainable world.
It is the largest peacetime civic action against waste in human history, aimed at raising awareness of the scale of the global mismanaged waste crisis threatening the environment and the lives of millions of people and living beings.
The previous World Cleanup Days have been organized with outstanding results – altogether, over 70 million people have picked up over 300,000 tons of waste. Last year alone, WCD engaged 15 million people.
It is important to state that cleanups are not meant to replace regular waste management. Massive engagement of people catalyze change in societies and speed up the transformation toward sustainability.
It’s a good thing then that World Cleanup Day is not just a cleanup – it’s a tool to catalyze change. All participating countries are aiming to engage 5% of their country’s population to catalyze positive change and accelerate the transformation of their circular economy and sustainable development.
Many countries which have reached their goal of engaging 5% of the population have taken a course to a circular economy – Slovenia and Bulgaria are two prime examples.
