RUBICONSmartCity was acquired by Routeware in August 2024 and has since been fully integrated into the company’s offering.

Rubicon’s smart city technology is now available to procure on Marketplace.city, an online platform that allows city governments to find, evaluate, and buy technology-based solutions to common city problems.

Our new partnership with Marketplace.city makes it possible for city governments to procure RUBICONSmartCity™ at the touch of a button. Our Marketplace.city page links to verified case studies with some of the city governments with which we are working, giving interested city government purchasers and third parties as much detail as possible about how our solution was implemented. Most importantly, it allows new potential government customers to see how and why our existing government customers procured our technology.

That’s why I love Marketplace.city so much. The platform represents a new approach to government procurement. Marketplace.city grew out of New York City’s attempts to procure technology solutions. Founded in 2016 as Marketplace.nyc, a collaboration between New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Technology and Innovation (MOTI), the platform proved the need for a smart marketplace that could break down information and procurement barriers, allowing technology solutions to be implemented faster and more efficiently.

Marketplace.city’s mission is to “simplify the process of finding, validating, and implementing new technology at the city level, so government can better improve the lives of their communities with smart solutions.”

A Better Way for Cities to Buy

In a 2018 op-ed by Steve Goldsmith, the Daniel Paul Professor of the Practice of Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, the 46th Mayor of Indianapolis, Indiana from 1992 to 2000, and former Deputy Mayor for Operations of New York City, Goldsmith described Marketplace.city as “a better way for cities to buy,” noting that the new platform “aims not only to take some of the risk out of municipal procurement, but to make the process smarter as well.”

Marketplace.city is not a procurement consortium. Instead, it is an entire platform that makes it easier for city governments to find technology-based solutions to their problems and then procure these solutions.

Verified Solutions

Marketplace.city is free for city governments to join. After a government has signed up, it can search by problem (such as smart city solutions, emergency services, food safety, and more).

“Marketplace.city’s mission is to simplify the process of finding, validating, and implementing new technology at the city level, so governments can improve the lives of their communities with smart solutions,” said Chris Foreman, CEO of Marketplace.city. “We are thrilled to welcome the RUBICONSmartCity solution to our buying platform and collaborate with the team at Rubicon in getting this solution out to the world.”

Marketplace.city is designed for cities that are interested in technologies that can help get them to the next level, and here at Rubicon we believe that RUBICONSmartCity is just that.
