{"id":8418,"date":"2021-02-09T00:18:27","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T08:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routeware.com\/blog\/all-aboard-the-tech-train\/"},"modified":"2025-05-05T11:15:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T18:15:38","slug":"all-aboard-the-tech-train","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routeware.com\/en_gb\/blog\/all-aboard-the-tech-train\/","title":{"rendered":"All Aboard the Tech Train &#8211; Government Digital Platforms in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 will be looked back upon as a year that brought many challenges, opportunities and changes to our everyday lives.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From online grocery purchase, to Amazon, voting and beyond, technology rose to the forefront of all that we do, creating and setting a dynamic that has accelerated technological change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, according to Microsoft\u2019s CEO Satya Nadella, the company saw <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-365\/blog\/2020\/04\/30\/2-years-digital-transformation-2-months\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two years of digital transformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happen over the course of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just two months<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This has implications far beyond IT departments. In reality, 2020 will be remembered (and studied) as a year of formative digital transformation &#8211; significantly disrupting the way we all work and play.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So much so, in fact that I\u2019ll go out on a limb to say:<br \/><\/span><i style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><br \/>Technology, leveraged liberally and properly, can help individuals and organizations <\/i><b style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><i>meet<\/i><\/b><i style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> or <\/i><b style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><i>exceed<\/i><\/b><i style=\"font-size: 18px;\"> their goals.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what opportunities can technology present for municipal solid-waste professionals in 2021 and beyond?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>On the Map<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework that helps to gather, manage and analyze data. They accept a wide range of data types, and transform that data into meaningful visualizations using maps and 3D scenes and are a staple in local government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most likely, your City, County, or Regional District will already have a GIS in place. But are you making the most of it? How could you use it to convey &#8211; or magnify &#8211; information to residents and other stakeholders.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some GIS services and software to look into, depending on your needs and goals:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/home\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESRI:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ESRI\u2019s GIS software allows you to host applications and data in one place. In addition, using its mapping and spatial analytics software called ArcGIS, public works departments can do everything from track the conditions of roads, to manage landfills and improve collection routes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgis.org\/en\/site\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">QGIS:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> QGIS is a free, user-friendly, open-source GIS that allows public works departments to tap into its area\u2019s geography for mapping, planning, and more.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/azure-maps\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Azure Maps:<\/span><\/a><span> Azure Maps allows you to integrate maps, spatial analytics, and more with open-source and other map controls. Using its location-based services, users can route vehicles, track assets, and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Connect<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today\u2019s digital communication products help municipalities and organizations save money by helping their audience self-serve. This prompts people to find real-time answers to commonly asked questions, without needing to speak to support.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These platforms also help to digitize materials which eliminates the need for printed fliers, pamphlets and calendars.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must strive for the best possible engagement with residents and fully realize the benefits while limiting the liabilities of technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These programs also simultaneously help us to keep our messaging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recollect.net\/government\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clear and focused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the resident, which ultimately helps produce good outcomes for public works departments and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a couple of solutions that fit the bill:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recollect.net\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReCollect:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ReCollect works to help overburdened recycling educators save time and money while combating recycling confusion with easy-to-use digital communications products like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recollect.net\/collection-calendar\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collection Calendar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recollect.net\/waste-wizard\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waste Wizard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onsolve.com\/solutions\/products\/codered\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CodeRED Mass Notification:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CodeRED offers cloud-based software government agencies may use to deliver alerts and other information via phone, email, text, and more.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Huddle Up<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teamwork looks a little differently these days as we do our best to cope with and adjust to the new normal presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. As we dial it back on regular meetings around the office, in board and conference rooms, we are charged with finding and relying on alternative ways to communicate with team members, exchange ideas, and stick to other business-as-usual routines as best we can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many jurisdictions will have record-keeping requirements that may pose limits, here, but this far into the pandemic, you\u2019re unlikely to be a trailblazer if you haven\u2019t yet started using an online communication program of some kind. There are plenty of options out there. Here are just a few:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/microsoft-teams\/group-chat-software\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Teams:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Microsoft Teams is a virtual communication platform where groups may instant message, call, video chat, share files, and more, all from the office or from the couch.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slack:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Slack is a \u201ccollaboration hub\u201d for instant messaging, file sharing, calls, and more, where team members can chat in groups (which may be organized by project, department, etc.), or one-on-one.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Zoom is a video and chat platform for teleconferencing and more, which also can be used on screens big or small. It allows teams and staff to join each other face-to-face, so to speak, from wherever they are. Video chats are especially great for meetings and brainstorming sessions.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/chime\/?chime-blog-posts.sort-by=item.additionalFields.createdDate&amp;chime-blog-posts.sort-order=desc\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Chime:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Amazon Chime is a platform for video conferencing and other styles of online meetings that also allows teams and staff members to gather together without actually having to gather together.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webex.com\/unified-homepage-081220201.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cisco Webex:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Webex offers video chat, messaging, and other virtual forms of communication, which also integrates with other apps such as Slack and Google Drive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Asset Management<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to what we have, how much we have of it, and many other parameters besides, spreadsheets and simple desktop databases are becoming things of the past. It\u2019s 2021, and we can do much better. Here are a handful of platforms to investigate if you haven\u2019t already:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sap.com\/canada\/products\/s4hana-erp\/features\/asset-management.html\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAP HANA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; SAP\u2019s S\/4HANA is an asset-management tool that helps plan, execute and schedule maintenance operations. It also allows users to manage various forms of data, such as responses and analytics.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartegraph.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartegraph:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cartegraph helps entities like municipalities and utilities manage and track assets, work orders, and more, all in one place, making for an organized system with efficient workflows that may be updated in real time. You can build maintenance schedules, create recurring tasks, sync up with the ArcGIS platform, and more, depending on your needs.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prometheus.io\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prometheus:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prometheus is an open-source monitoring system with a dimensional data model, flexible query language, and more. It allows users to power metrics and alerts, scrape and visualize data, and monitor all things web- and network-based.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Project Management<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many of us are operating remotely or are limiting face-to-face interactions, coordinating moving parts, completing complex projects, and collaborating as a team is more challenging now than ever. Gone are the days of sticky notes and dry-erase boards to keep everyone on the same page.<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, this is a problem developers have faced for years, so there\u2019s more than one app for that. We\u2019ve even seen some governments use these processes as an opportunity to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GDSTeam\/status\/620548241839407104\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve transparency and accountability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are just a few to check out:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asana.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asana:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Asana is a project-management app that allows users to bring their work into one shared space, organize and assign tasks, and more.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/monday.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Monday:<\/span><\/a><span><span> Monday is a teamwork platform that helps groups manage tasks and projects, activities, and more in one workspace.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trello.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trello:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Trello helps groups organize their work onto \u201cboards,\u201d keeping tasks, information, and more in one place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Social Media<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Media isn\u2019t just for teens and grandparents anymore. If anything, we\u2019re hearing that residents and customers now not only expect a social media presence, but also that municipal staff members respond in a timely manner to complaints or problems reported through the platforms, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are, you or your staff are well-versed in social media, and you already know that it no longer represents an opportunity to take a break from your work! Instead, you can use social media to your advantage, connecting with residents and meeting them where they are. Popular platforms to do so include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Connect with residents, share information and marketing messages, and more through Facebook posts and its ad campaigns.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Twitter:<\/span><\/a><span><span> Share alerts, snippets of information, links to press releases, graphics, and more through Twitter.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>Instagram:<\/span><\/a><span><span> Share infographics, behind-the-scenes staff photos, and more to help forge a relationship with residents and keep them posted about what you\u2019d like them to know.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/snapchat.com\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snapchat:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Share brief updates, links, and more through short videos or stills on Snapchat.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hootsuite.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hootsuite:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Platforms such as Hootsuite help you streamline and manage your various social media accounts in one place.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Customer Service<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an ideal world, problems and issues could be reported and systematically prioritized and managed all in one place. (Fingers crossed that not every issue is a dumpster fire that needs immediate attention!)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, there are a variety of platforms out there that will help you get one step closer to that. Simply direct residents to the platform of your choice to report whatever challenges they face in the streets or parks, and go from there. Adopting or adding digital systems will provide numerous benefits now and in the future, not only allowing you to keep pace with modern times, but ultimately reduce costs, solve problems, and save time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For better or worse, technology is a train you don\u2019t want to miss, and it\u2019s leaving the station.
