{"id":8267,"date":"2016-07-28T04:32:18","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T11:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/routeware.com\/blog\/better-call-a-kab\/"},"modified":"2025-05-06T14:06:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-06T21:06:43","slug":"better-call-a-kab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/routeware.com\/en_gb\/blog\/better-call-a-kab\/","title":{"rendered":"Better Call a KAB: Teaching Residents About Recycling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In communication and outreach practices, there&#8217;s a simple change model called KAB &#8212; knowledge, attitude, behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The principal behind this model is pretty straightforward: when someone has knowledge about a topic or issue, they then develop an attitude about that issue, which leads to a behaviour that addresses that issue.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of waste diversion education, the aim is that the KAB model leads to a responsible environmental behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.au\/news\/blogs\/plastic-pollution-is-killing-sea-turtles-heres-how#gs.qvwafg\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">plastic shopping bags in the water are killing sea turtles<\/span><\/a> (knowledge). This fills you with a sense of dread or outrage (attitude). You decide to use reusable shopping bags instead of taking plastic shopping bags (behaviour).<\/p>\n<p>Pretty simple and straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>This model also becomes continuous &#8212; ideally, each arrival at a responsible environmental behaviour will jump start a desire to know more, think\/feel more, do more.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to waste diversion communications, how do you think municipalities and haulers are doing moving residents through the KAB model?<\/p>\n<p>Are municipalities and haulers\u00a0focusing a lot on knowledge (&#8220;put these items in your recycling bin&#8221;) but coming up short on attitudes (feelings about the importance or benefits of recycling)?
